Scratch storyboard update

When filming we changed our storyboard slightly as we found other ideas thats we could add to make it effective.
After the initial tally scratching, we have the man walking into the building. He then walks down a flight of stairs, and down a corridor, turning left. He enters a room, and slams the door. Sitting down at his desk, he finds a small piece of paper saying 'YOU ARE NEXT', and he throws the contents of his desk to the floor. He hears a large bang, and stands up, only to find a woman walking in at the same time. She states it is his turn, and shoots him.
After each scene, we will insert a credit, and have selected the credits we wish to use.

Shooting Schedule

We made our first shooting schedule in december but due to unforseen circumstances prblems occured and in result we couldmnt follow the original schedule and then had to adjust it to include the new plans and what has already been completed.
On the shooting schedule it explains What date will be doing the filming, what equipment has been used or was planned to be used although this may have changed when filming. Also who was involved whn filming, what section/frame is being filmed at the time and the location.

Actors for scratch.
The actor we have chosen is called Martin chord. He is also studing for AS media studies and does performaing arts so we thought he would be professional and good for the part. We also thought that he would suit the part as his appearence looks as what we want the character to be shown as. He was also the best person we thought that would play the part out of the people we asked.

The woman actress isnt shown, only the shadow is shown, so i will be the shadow for this part of the opening.

The soundtrack for Scratch.
We only have two minutes for our film piece so we need to find a piece of music that will fit this exact criteria. We want continuity throughout our opening of our film so we need to make sure the soundtrack does this so we need to find a piece that is two minutes or very close to two minutes.

We have looked at different soundtracks and a music site that is very helpful called
http://freeplaymusic/. We found some soundtracks that we think will be appropriate for our opening. When looking at this site we found a piece called 'Gates to Adis', that we found http://freeplaymusic.com/search/category_search.php?t=v&i=944 and it is track number 7, We thought this piece gave a scary feel to it and may make viewers confused. We also when looking for a soundtrack came across a piece called Steadfast which i thought sounded as if it was showing a flashback and telling a story. When looking on the website again we came across a soundtrack that is very familiar to many people called Rex Tremendae (from the Mozart Requiem mass)Track 1.
http://www.freeplaymusic.com/search/keyword_search.php.
After finding this soundtrack we thought this would be really good to use as we didnt wanted vocals, choirs, some stings and drums and a loud drum beats. I think it gives a dramatic feel to it and may make the viewers curious. At the start of the opening of the thriller we want to show a Vinyl record machine starting and at the same time the soundtrack starts, when listening to this soundtrack we thought it would fit the period of time well.
We have decided to use the soundtrack called Rex Tremendae (from the Mozart Requiem Mass), As we think it sits well to what we want to show.

Credit typography.

We researched some fonts for our credits. We wanted a specific type of font for our film credits as it is called scratch we wanted to give an effect of the scratching within the credits. The title scratch symbolises the film greatly and would be good to show this through the credits.

We looked at many fonts and found two certain fonts that we thought would be suitable for the scratching effect we want to show. Below are the two fonts we found.

The first typography we have looked at is scratch font one. We liked this typography as it looks as if it has been scratched in to something and this is the effect we want to create. I we use it for the credits it will show continuity between the opening and the film its self.

The second typography we have looked at is scratch font two, 'Nail scratch'. We thought this
gave more of a subtle effect as it doesn't looked
as scratched,

After researching some scratched fonts, we came up with an idea and have decided to use scratching or writing to make a scratched affect, the credits into objects for example, Trees, walls, the ground or a locker. This will give the effect of actual scratching and show what the film is about and showing the title name, 'scratch'. This way also may give more Suspense and suspicion towards the audience as normally credits have a specific computerised font whereas we will not.

The scratch characters.

We only have two characters for the opening to our thriller film. We have decided to have a man and a woman. The man is seen but the woman isn't seen.

Woman- The woman is not seen withing the opening of the thriller. She is only shown through a Shadow and only a shadow. The identify of the woman will be unknown. It is clear in the opening that she is the killer of the man that dies and uses a small handgun to do so.

Man- This man has not name when we show him in the opening sequence. He wears clothes that suits that time period and makes him look very sophisticated, the clothes and accessories that he wears all match and the way he talks suits what he wears. The first times we are showing the man in the opening is when he is walking down the corridor with his heels clicking against the floor. The way we want to shoot him is to make him look very tall and elegant.

Before the opening the plan is for the man to have just murdered his wife after finding out that she committed adultery against him. So we are showing after he has committed the crime we try to show that he is frustrated through the use of shots have planned. We show him smashing the photo of him and his wife and then is confronted by the shadow which is infact a woman. the man is then killed.

My partner and I made sure we brainstormed our ideas on what our film title should be and we both came up with different ideas then promoted it towards our target auidence.
  • The Hidden code
  • Scratch
  • Lacerator
  • The scarifier

Above are the names we thought for the title of our film as we tried to relate what we was showing in the part of the film in the title.

We then after thinking of titles, promoted these titles to 25 people of the target auidence after showing them the general plot we then got feedback on what they thought out of the names we gave would be suitable for the final title. I have shown this through tally's.

  • Hidden code- 5 votes
  • scratch- 9 votes
  • Lacerator- 4 votes
  • The scarifier- 7 votes

After this research we found the title that was most popular with the target auidence was the title Scratch. With this result we have decided to use that title.

Frame one:
Action- Man scratches four lines into a wall and this is showing tally marks. His arm is in the shot but it then exits the shot via the bottom- left hand corner.

Shot selected- We chose a close-up shot for this frame as it shows well the action within the shot and gives an idea of what is atcually going on without showing too much and giving too much away by showing who it is and then adding mystery.
Effects and lighting- There will be a sudden (non effect) transition into the frame, a fade out into the next set of credits. The lighting will be very low to create the atmosphere.
Props needed for the frame: A wall and sharp object for scratching numbers into the wall is needed for this frame.

Credits:
For our main task we will a similar order of credits to what the normal order is for opening sequences:
  • Film company name) resents

  • A (Producer's name) production

  • A (Director's name) film

  • Main actor's name

  • Main supporting actor's name

  • 2x other supporting actors

  • Casting by

  • Music by

  • Costume Designer

  • Editor

  • Production Designer

  • Director of Photography

  • Executive Producer

  • Produced by

  • Story by

  • Screenplay by

  • Directed by
For our credits we will not need to search for different font styles and texts. As we have decided this will not be relevant for our particular idea for our film. Instead of using this way of crediting we are thinking about scratching into objects to give the certain effect that we think will suit the film.

Planning of locations

We have decided to use the location of our school grounds. We have decided to use this location as it suits the plot, period style of the film. The location looks very old and periodic this will help the viewer to establish what is happening and what time period we are trying to show to the audience we will use effects when we edit it to turn it into an old building which is used for an old office.

We have also thought that this location will be good for opening to our thriller as inside the school suits what we are trying to to show for the audience as it looks very old and as if it is atcually filmed in the time period we are trying to show as it is going to show a flashback in that location.

The building
This is the outside of the location we used and we thought this gives quite a majestic look and important when in sepia. This will be good for the flashback that we intend to use.

The corridor

The reason we chose this corridor for after the stairs scene
is because we believe it looks very old. Martin's silent footsteps down this corridor, and the slightly 'juddery' feel to the shots add to the mystery and the upset caused previous to the film.

The office
We chose the school's meeting room as Martin's office, as
this room only had two windows, and the dark carpet looks
good against the lighter walls. There were many tables in the room so we moved them out of the way we also found that there was a notice board on the wall we found this very useful.

The credits
This part of the school location was where we made alot of our credits we used charchol and chalk and this then gave the effect that we scratched into walls and objects but by just using materials that can wipe clean off of, paper, walls and th floor.

Information on our target audience.

The target audience we are thinking about for our main thriller film task are teenagers and adults which are 15+ as it has an dated outcome and they will have a better understanding of the film and will be more interested also we thought this would be a good idea as we know from looking at thriller DVDS released last year that the average age restriction is a 15, so if we aim for over 15's, then we have hit the main market.

We would like our film to be aimed towards an audience of 15+ as they may relate to what is happening more and may relate to the style more but even though we have certificated aged it 15+ as we think that it may appeal to younger teenagers aswell.

I have researched what is allowed and what isn't allowed in the the film certificate 15+ and my partner and I will follow this guideline to make sure our opening to a thriller is at certificate 15+.

Theme - There is no them prohibited, provided the treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds.

Language-
There can be frequent use of strong language but strongest terms are
rarely acceptable. aggressive, strong language and sexual abuse.

Nudity-
There are no constraints on nudity in a non- sexual or educational context.

Sex-
Sexual activity and nudity can be portrayed but not in strong detail. Casual sex must be handled
responsibly and carefully. Some strong verbal references about sexual behaviour may appear.

Violence-
Violence can be Strong but it must not show infliction of pain and injuries in detail. Sexual violence must
be brief.

Horror-
Some horror may be acceptable but infliction or pain shown in detail is not allowed.

Drugs-
Drug use can be shown but it may not be shown in clear detail. The film should make sure that drugs are
not promoted or encouraged in any way.

Imitable
techniques-Dangerous combat techniques such as ear claps, head butts and blows to the neck are unlikely to be acceptable. There may be no emphasis on the use of easily accessible lethal weapons (in particular, knives.)

My partner and I will make sure we stay to this guideline for certificate 15+.

We have also thought about the gender of our target audience. Whilst planning our thriller opening we thought of the different characters within the sequence and how they are going to be represented and portrayed. We thought about the main male character and the other character of the a woman that is not shown the face of, just her voice and shadow. We thought that the film would be more appealing towards males as the sequence shows more of the male character and males from the audience can relate to it more and understand the character more than a female may do. A certain part of the sequence we have thought that may challenge the representations of the normal 'male' and 'female'. as in this part the man is shown that he feels very frightened and then gets killed by the unshown woman this i am hoping doesnt change the target audience and what appeals to them.

Opening to our thriller.

A man walks into a building and walks down a corridor. He then walks into the room and sits down at his desk. The man then starts writing a letter and the main content says 'its done' He then picks up his wedding photo that is on his desk and then smashes, as he does this he hears a bang. He then stands up and tries to call out but does not see anything. Suddenly a shady figure walks into the room the man is in then points a gun and the man and a large stand off occurs. Muttering is heard, then a large gunshot. The shot cuts to a man scratching a 5 tally chart on a wall.
When doing our opening to our thriller we will have to use different shots and we need to plan this.
